Wentworth: Mega History, Mega MysteryWentworth is considered the gateway to Outback NSW, and is situated on the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers in southwestern New South Wales.
The city is tucked into the corner of New South Wales and bounded by both Victoria and South Australia. Mildura, situated on the Victorian side of the Murray, is the nearest commercial centre of any size. Mildura Airport is the nearest place to fly into, with Wentworth just under 30 minutes' drive away.
Wentworth still has many beautiful buildings representing the history of the town. St John's Anglican Church and Wentworth Courthouse, the Old Wentworth Gaol, the Post Office and the original Customs Officer's house are just some of the gems that reflect those early days.
Out of town, fascinating Aboriginal heritage sites are among the most spectacular in the country. The amazing red dunes of Perry Sandhills are geologically traceable to the Barkindji Aboriginal people and the Ice Age (which was 40,000 years ago!).
Fossils of extinct mega fauna - giant animals that once roamed the area - have been found amongst the dunes and you can also see evidence of these in the Wentworth Museum.
