Alice Springs, NORTHERN TERRITORY
Airing Date: Oct 24th, 2005
It's the dead centre of the red centre, it' the capital city of the outback, it's Alice Springs. But it is more than just a blow-through town on the way to other Aussie icons, these days it is a thriving city, or at least a big country town with plenty to see and do.
Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the Alice Springs Golf Course. Greg Norman and Stewart Appleby have played the 18 hole Alice Springs Golf Course and it's been voted one of the top ten desert courses in the world.
Art is also a huge part of Alice Springs' cultural attractions. One desert country painting sold for nearly $800,000. There are plenty of art galleries around, but a good one to put on your list is the Mbantua Gallery. Here a painting starts from around $16. Over 200 traditional Aboriginal artists are producing works for the gallery on a regular basis. Earlier this year Prince Charles popped in and had a look around.
The Lane is a swanky bistro where you can be entertained by free live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The Lane serves French bistro cuisine, tasty tapas plates, wood-fired gourmet pizzas and has a selection of about 300 different wines.
If you need somewhere to stay why not stay right in the middle of town at Voyages Alice Springs Resort, situated on the Todd River. The Resort combines efficient and friendly outback service with modern, comfortable facilities.
