The festival of oldThe Abbey Medieval festival is held in the surrounds of the Abbey Medieval Museum, 50 kilometres north of Brisbane, just outside of Caboolture.
The Festival is wholly run by volunteer staff and is held as a fundraiser to help preserve and maintain the collections of the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, helping to fund its acclaimed education programs.
The Tournament has grown considerably from its conception in 1988 when 30 re-enactors performed to a crowd of about 300. The Abbey Tournament is now the largest medieval festival in Australia, and attracts crowds of more than 12,000 a day with over 1000 re-enactors, artisans, staff and stall holders.
The festival is run over 7 days, in the last week of the QLD winter school holidays, kicking off with a "medieval banquet" and followed by a week of classes and workshops. There are separate classes for adults and children including Knight School, Masque Making, Cooking Class, Shield Making and Dancing Workshops, to name just a few.
This is followed by the tournament; a 2 day affair of grand parading, jousting, mock combats, archery, dancing, music, a masked ball, crafts, living history encampments and live theatre.
The Abbey Museum is open most days of the year 10am to 4pm - Monday to Saturday and is one of Australias premier fine arts and archaeological museums. Its displays have won international acclaim.
