Skybury Coffee, Cairns, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Aug 28th, 2006
Located just over a one hour drive from Cairns past the township of Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands, the Australian Coffee Centre opened its doors to the nostrils and palettes of the public.
Skybury Coffee itself is not exactly new... but the coffee centre is! They've been growing coffee here for 18 years, have been selling to the international market for 15, and harvest 70% of Australia's coffee beans. Outside, visitors can stroll through the coffee plantation, see a coffee harvester close up, and enjoy the dry temperate climate in acres of native gardens.
Birdlife abounds, and the Skybury team have included a generously-sized soft release pen where recovering native wildlife can be re-introduced to Bushland surroundings. When you taste coffee, you should slurp it so that it is aerated and contacts all parts of your tongue. and are detected by the taste buds.
There are 4 characteristics to consider when tasting coffee:
1. Aroma - the first impression upon smelling the coffee.
2. Body - the feel of the coffee's weight or density. Whether or not some coffees are actually heavier than others, they can still feel thicker or heavier. The brewing method can also influence the perception of body, with espresso feeling the heaviest.
3. Flavour - the overall perception of individual flavour components in the coffee. This can be very subjective and there is no set vocabulary to describe the tastes. Like wine, almost any adjective goes. So feel free to express whatever it is you taste in your coffee!
4. Acidity - the fruitiness or crispness of the coffee. It has nothing to do with PH levels but everything to do with lively, refreshing flavours.
