Rivers and RosesRenmark in South Australia, is the oldest settlement on the Murray River. It's located 256 km north east of Adelaide and 145 km from Mildura.
The town is a popular base for houseboating holidays along the mighty Murray River providing great access for cruising past majestic cliffs and through the stunning backwater environment of the Murraylands region.
The only requirements for learning to steer a houseboat is that you have a drivers license and be over 18 years of age. The owners of Riverfun Houseboats will give you a 20 minute lesson on how to handle the houseboat and boating rules, and then you're ready to head up river. You'll find everything you need aboard the "Gunnadoo" houseboat, with a BBQ, gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, two TV's and 4 large bedrooms that can sleep up to 12 people!
Murray River water levels in South Australia are at normal levels, which means the drought has not affected the opportunities for houseboat holidays. The river's not only good for cruising, but provides a great base for water activities -whether you just want to splash around and swim or up for some action-packed water-skiing.
Renmark is also renowned for its roses. The small South Australian town blooms with thousands of roses which are best seen at their annual Rose Festival, held every October. Gardens across town are open for viewing during the festival week and many entertaining events take place.
And if you can't make it to Renmark for the Rose Festival...there's more than 50,000 roses to be seen at Ruston's Rose Garden (the largest collection of Roses in the southern hemisphere!) and they're open most of the year, from October to June.
