Craft Fair, Deloraine, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Jun 5th, 2006
Every year in November the small Tasmanian town of Deloraine comes alive to host the Tasmanian Craft Fair. Celebrating its 25th birthday in 2005, it is Australia's largest working Craft Fair.
The Tasmanian Craft Fair was conceived in 1980 in an endeavour to bring people of the community together. Deloraine at that time was the centre of a large alternate life style population that carried with them many handcraft skills. It has become the Rotary Club of Deloraine's major fund raising event and has allowed the club to inject considerable amounts of money into many local community and overseas programs.
The quality crafts on show and for sale are as diverse as woodcarvings featuring fine Tasmanian timbers, hand blown glassware, leather and metal work, toys and garments of all descriptions. Additional attractions include calligraphy, quilting, egg carving, spinning, silk screen painting, kite and kaleidoscope making, blacksmithing, wrought-iron work, basket weaving, and candle wicking.
All stalls and working exhibits are under cover in various Deloraine venues and over the four days. Visitors have a chance to explore the many venues throughout the town by hopping on and off the free buses that travel from venue to venue. In 2000, the Tasmanian Craft Fair was selected as The 'Tasmanian Community Event of the Year'.
