The Huon Trail, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Oct 9th, 2006
Take a journey into a soft blue-green landscape, rich fertile valleys, winding waterways, old growth forests, mighty rivers and the Hartz Mountain National Park. The Huon Trail is a loop drive from Hobart down to the southernmost road in Australia and back again!
The Huon Valley Council covers 5497square kilometres and is the southernmost local government area in Australia. Despite its proximity to Hobart, (a 40 minute drive away) the area retains the beauty, charm and heritage of a bygone era.
The Huon trail is a driving trail. At 24 roadside locations there are timber crowned signs telling tales of frogs and fossils, logs and lighthouses, tall trees and tall ships, Gondwana plants and Golden Delicious apples, wooden boats and whalers, bandicoots and blackcurrants.
The area is renowned for its produce, mushrooms, wine, seafood, fruit and gourmet delicacies. The "Taste of the Huon", held each March, is a weekend celebration of the best that the Valley has to offer. Roadside stalls sell many of the in season fruits such as apples, pears and berries, for a fraction of the cost of supermarkets.
Tasmania's Cockle Creek is the southernmost part of Australia. It's a tiny settlement from where you can take a walk for a couple of hours and stand at the edge of the world looking out to the blue expanse of the Southern Ocean.
