Woody Island, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Dec 2nd, 2002
Situated just a half-hour boat ride from Esperance in the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia, the island is relatively small in size, approximately 1.5km long and covering 240 stunning hectares.
The only way out to Woody Island is on board the daily nature cruise. On the way there's more than just water between you and your budget island holiday because this bay is packed with dolphins, sea lions and even a few New Zealand fur seals.
The only way to get around the island is by foot and there is an abundance of activities and interests on the Island - fishing, swimming, snorkelling, bush walking and the BBQs are free to use.
As for bargain accommodation you've got a couple of options: do-it-yourself camping or on-site tents. Some of the safari huts come with extras such as a private deck and comfy beds.
If you really want a wildlife treat, every year around mid-September thousands of mutton birds fly in to this nature reserve to breed. Free guided bird walks run every night at this time of year.
