Vienna, Austria
Airing Date: Apr 28th, 2007
Vienna is the capital of
Austria, which sits in the centre of
Europe, between
Switzerland and
Hungary. A city of waltzes and whipped cream, high culture, chocolate and of course opera. But for all its tradition, it is also a modern and happening European city.
Most of Vienna's main sights are located in the
Innere Stadt. The district is decorated with the outstanding Gothic heights of
Stephansdom, the massive
Hofburg (Imperial Palace), the cultured history of the
Judenplatz (Jewish quarter) and a scattering of historic streets and squares.
One of the city's main landmarks is
The Giant Ferris wheel located at
The Prater. It's actually 100 years old, so it's been around much longer than the
London Eye, but it's still one of the best ways to get a bird's eye view of the city. The Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) was erected in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Empereror Franz Joseph I.
Traditional coffeehouses still flourish in Vienna. The locals spend hours reading newspapers, writing, and meeting up with friends. These days many of the coffeehouses offer between 20 and 30 different types of coffee.
The city's
7th district is where all the young and up-coming Vienna fashion designers flaunt their fashionable products and for fun after-dark,
Caf Leopold is one of the most happening places to hang out and see Austrian DJ's spin a few tunes. This place is actually a museum by day (
Leopold Museum) with the caf and restaurant operating way past the museum opening hours and into the night.
