Guilin and Longsheng, China

Airing Date: Apr 26th, 2008

Let your hair down with the long-haired ladies of Longsheng

Guilin's dramatic limestone peaks have been an inspiration to Chinese artists and poets for centuries. Guilin is situated in the northeast of the Guangxi Region on the west back of the beautiful Li River. Guilin is considered the pearl of China's thriving tourist industry on account of its natural beauty and historic treasures. It is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding ethnic villages and countryside.

From Guilin town take the winding road to Longsheng to encounter the region's engineering marvel - the Dragon's Backbone terraces - where rice paddies cling precariously to the surrounding peaks and valleys. The terraces were built 800 years ago and were completed by the Zhuang - the largest minority group in China. There are many viewpoints from which to view this stunning scenery - a photographer's dream!

The ethnic minorities in this area are friendly and hospitable. You can visit the local villages and see their traditional houses built on stilts. The long-haired ladies from the Yao tribe can be seen washing their 4-foot long hair along the riverbanks. They hold a Guinness Record for the length of their hair!
