Li River and Yangshuo
Airing Date: May 3rd, 2008
Limestones & lush landscapes along the legendary Li Experience one of China's most transcendental boat journeys along the legendary Li River. One thousand years ago a Chinese poet wrote about this famous journey, saying that "the river is a green silk ribbon, and the hills are jade hair-pins". With the region's stunning limestone landscape as a backdrop, travel from Guilin to the quaint town of Yangshuo taking in the bizarre rock formations along the way.
Yangshuo is set in lush green rice paddies and surrounded by meandering river ways and limestone peaks. It is a quaint town with cobblestone streets, markets and a strong cafe culture. West St is the main thoroughfare in town and the 'Hello Market' is a must see.
Get to know the locals by cycling around the paddy fields and practicing the ancient art of Tai Chi along the banks of the Li River. Relax at one of the many cafs in Yangshuo town - you'll find Chinese cuisine here as well as Western fare in the restaurants; everything from noodles and fresh fish to shepherds pie and pizza!
Yangshuo is also China's foremost venue for rock climbing. Moon Hill, which gets its name from the crescent shaped fissure that pierces the peak, is one of Yangshuo's most visited sites. In spite of rapid tourism development, Yangshuo is one of the only major tourist destinations in the country from which rural China is easily accessible...So jump on that bike!
