Tanna Island is sometimes referred to as the "Island of Fire", so called for its most awesome feature - Mt Yasur - the most accessible, active volcano in the world.
This ancient volcano is located in one of the most pristine, unspoilt corners of the globe. Tanna is a favourite destination for volcanologists, adventure travellers and tourists from all over the world.
Tours to the tip of the volcano are available. You will need:
- * A good pair of walking shoes / sandals;
- * A torch;
- * An item of warm clothing
- * Insect repellent.
The climb to the summit of Mount Yasur is quite steep and the ground is uneven. It's a 150m climb from the car park to the crater rim. This takes approximately 10 minutes.
While the weather is likely to be warm in the daytime, after sunset it can become quite cool at the top of the volcano, especially during April through to November.
The level of activity within Yasur fluctuates between dangerous and relatively calm, but when it's hot - it's hot! It's important to take heed of your guide about how close you can go.
Some visitors find Yasur a terrifying experience but it's definitely unforgettable and shouldn't be missed. At night the fireworks are more spectacular, and you can see the rocks coming.
While life in Vanuatu's towns has altered considerably in recent times, village life is much as it has always been. Virtually the entire rural population is engaged in subsistence farming, supplemented by hunting, gathering and fishing, with some cash cropping.
The forests are a major resource, providing medicine, food, building materials and timber for boat building and artefacts.
