Vietnam Shopping, VIETNAM

Dubbed as the Paris of the Orient, Hanoi is a shopper's paradise, particularly if you're looking for homewares. But it's not just the traditional markets and great bargains that make Hanoi such a worthwhile shopping destination; it's the city's unique history and fascinating culture.

Whether you're strolling through the Old Quarter or enjoying the local cuisine, you'll find Hanoi has so much to offer. And instead of being a chore, shopping in Hanoi is a great way to learn about the city's magical present and past.

The best place to start your homewares shopping is in the Old Quarter. With more than a thousand years of history, the Old Quarter remains one of Vietnam's most lively and unusual places.

A stroll through the Old Quarter can last anywhere from a few minutes to the better part of day, depending on how many bargains you find. You can buy almost anything - including woollen clothes, cosmetics, fake Ray Ban sunglasses, luxury foods, jewellery and woven mats. There are about 50 markets in Hanoi. One of the best is the three-storey Dong Xuan Market. It's located in the Old Quarter, about one kilometre from the Hoan Kiem Lake. The market houses hundreds of stalls ablaze with colours and an array of cheap goods.

If you're looking for something in particular, it's a good idea to go a bit further out of central Hanoi. A little village called Bat Trang, half an hour out of the city, has been making pottery for more than 400 years, and is a great place to pick up some unique pieces.

Once you've finished your shopping spree, you may find that not everything fits in your luggage. Fortunately, you can easily post them back, and most shops can arrange shipment for you.

If you spend more than $400, be aware that you must declare it. The amount of duty you pay depends on what you've bought and how much it cost. For more information go to the Australian Customs Service website.
