Esperance
Some say Esperance has the best beaches in Australia - you'll find it hard to argue with them. You'll have to drive to reach some of the picture-perfect ones, such as Lucky Bay, but even the town beaches, like Twilight Cove, have squeaky, white sand and clear, azure water. No need to fight for solitude because Esperance's isolation guarantees that.

Coming and Going
Transwa (tel: 1300 662 205; www.transwa.wa.gov.au) runs a Perth-Esperance coach service every day except Saturday. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the bus leaves from East Perth Terminal and runs via Jerramungup and Dumbleyung (10hr). On Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, it takes a more inland route via Hyden and Kulin (10hr). Buses return to Perth at every day except Sunday
Transwa also operates a regular service from Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Esperance, and an Esperance to Albany service with connections to Bremer Bay and Hopetoun.
Getting About
There are plenty of taxis (tel: 9071 1782) in Esperance. For car rentals try Avis (tel: 9071 3998; cnr Norseman & Harbour Rds) or Budget (tel: 9071 2775; Lalor Dr).
